The request for protection refers to the threats and acts of intimidation towards leaders of the Saramaka people for having used the protection mechanisms of the inter-American human rights system to defend their territory against the risk of mining exploitation.

The Inter-American Court rejected the request because it considered that the requirements of extreme gravity and urgency were not met.
