The case concerns forced labor and debt bondage practiced in the large estate known as Fazenda Brasil Verde in the State of Pará, as well as the lack of prevention and response by the State to such human rights violations.

In its ruling, the Inter-American Court expanded on the content and scope of the concepts of slavery and forced labor, as well as the positive obligations of the State within this context.

The Inter-American Court also analyzed the State response in terms of due diligence and effective judicial protection.
