The facts of the case concern the prohibition -existant in Costa Rica since 2000- of the practice of an assisted reproduction technique known as in vitro fertilization.

In its ruling, the Inter-American Court approved a friendly settlement agreement reached by the parties during the period granted to the State to respond to the brief containing pleadings and motions.
