Lagos del Campo
Case- Summary
The facts of the case concern the dismissal (in June 1989) of Mr. Alfredo Lagos del Campo, president of the Electoral Committee of the Inudstrial Community of the company Ceper-Pirelli, as a result of statements made during an interview with the magazine ‘La Razón” whereby he denounced undue company interference with organizations that represent workers. The dismissal was subsequently confirmed by the national courts.
In its sentence, the Inter-American Court analyzed the how the right to freedom of thought and expression are exercised in labor contexts and established specific violations of economic, social and cultural rights protected in Article 26 of the American Convention on Human Rights. Additionally, it established violations of access to justice within the realm of employment stability.
