The request for protection concerns the inability to register Mr. Jorge Castañeda Gutman as a candidate for the presidency of Mexico, due an electoral law establishing the right to be nominated for and run for federal elective office can only be exercised through one of the registered political parties, and the imminent deadline for registering candidates to the Presidency.

The Inter-American Court dismissed the request because it considered that the matter related to the merits of the petition pending before the Inter-American Commission.
