and complaining about the pain. 33 Other officers also hit him with a stick. 34 The alleged victim was subjected to further beatings throughout the morning. 35 27. The same day, at around 3 p.m., Mr. López was transferred along with other detainees to the premises of the National Police’s Specialized Group, where they were taken to the “Cuadrilátero,” (literally, the “boxing ring”) 36 a place of confinement for police officers. Mr. López was kept there until next day, when he was transferred back to Metropolitan Police Station 11 and kept, according to Mr. López, handcuffed with his hands behind his back in a cell measuring two meters by three meters with other ordinary prisoners, where, according to his testimony, “there were not even any mattresses.” 37 28. At noon on May 21, 2000, the handcuffs were removed and he was taken to the bathroom to clean himself up, after which he was handcuffed again. 38 That same day, he received a visit from his then wife, who was six months pregnant. 39 According to the alleged victim’s statement, the visit lasted 10 minutes, 40 after which he was taken back to his cell at Metropolitan Police Station 11. 41 That evening, Mr. López was transferred to the Marine Corps, where he was again blindfolded and interrogated about the attempted coup d’état and the role that Chief Inspector (Comisario Principal) A.C. allegedly played in it. 42 While Mr. López was being interrogated, the then Minister of the Interior, W.B., was at the Marine Corps facilities. 43 33 Cf.
