Masacre de El Mozote
Case- Summary
The facts of the case concern a series of successive massacres which occurred in December 1981, in the north of the Department of Morazán. The massacres occurred in the context of a military operation which resulted in the death of approximately one thousand people, among whom a high number were children. The investigations relating to these events were closed as a consequence of the application of the Amnesty Law.
In spite of the acknowledgement of responsibility carried out by the State, the IA Court established a factual framework which took into account the historic relevance of the denounced events. Said events directly relate to a period of extreme violence during the armed internal conflict, which responded to the politics of a state characterized by military counter-insurgency actions which had as an objective the mass and indiscriminate annihilation of villages which were assimilated through suspicion to guerrilla groups.
