47. Subsequently, the prison director arrived at the entrance to cell No. 19 and ordered that the second gate be opened. Immediately afterwards the firefighters arrived.42 48. One hundred and seven inmates were killed in the incident and, of these, at least 101 died due to massive inhalation of carbon dioxide (asphyxia by suffocation), and five died in the hospital with severe burns. There is no evidence that any inmates were injured or killed by firearms. E. Causes of the fire 49. According to the expert opinions presented during the investigations conducted under case file No. 1009/04, the fire originated from an overload owing to the excessive number of appliances connected that generated a short circuit in the electrical system. 50.
